Wildlife & the Natural Environment

The beautiful wildflower machair is a sight to behold in the summer, and you’ll often see red deer, sheep, and Highland cows roaming freely around.

For those who are patient, there are incredible treats to be found throughout the year. You may be lucky enough to spot white-tailed & golden eagles, corncrakes, or oystercatchers (over 320 bird species have been recorded on the Outer Hebrides). The waters and coast are also home to otters, seals, basking sharks, minke whales, and dolphins.

Beautiful, unspoilt, empty beaches

With 24 sandy beaches to explore, a visitor to Uig is truly spoilt for choice!

You can find everything from the extensive Uig Sands to the tropical white sands of Reef. Feel the crashing waves at Mangersta, catch a perfect wave at Cliff beach, or enjoy the rolling stones on Aird Bay, located right in front of our SEApods.

The best part? The beaches are never crowded, leaving you to enjoy their natural beauty in peace.

Rich History

With ruins and artefacts ranging from the Bronze Age Callanish Stones, the Vikings and their 12th century chessmen, cold war intrigue, to the blackhouses occupied as recently as 1976… Lewis has an unrivalled wealth of history and culture to share.

Arts, Crafts & Music

Harris Tweed is a unique, hand-woven fabric still made in the traditional way in the homes of islanders. This rich tradition is part of a wider arts scene on the island, with many local artists drawing inspiration from the amazing landscape in their studios.

In July, the Hebridean Celtic Festival, also known as HebCelt, attracts a range of musicians to Lews Castle for a week of music and culture.

Dark Skies & Aurora

Light pollution is at a minimum here so we have dark skies, amazing blankets of stars and between September and March we regularly see the Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights.
